Candle Care Guide
Follow these candle care tips to ensure that you burn your bookish candle safely and that you maximise the burn time.
TOP TIP! Look after the WICK. This is the number one rule for all candles, not just ours! The wick is a workhorse for your candle and you need to keep it trimmed to keep it working effectively. Always pinch the cooled, burned end of the wooden wick away or trim it with a wick trimmer to 5mm before you relight your candle. This is especially essential for wooden wicks as they are notoriously temperamental, however, if you keep that wick trimmed, you'll be rewarded with a clean burning crackle that's really comforting.
The FIRST time you light your candle, you must let it burn until the wax melts all the way to the edge of the glass jar. Wax has memory and if you want to prevent tunnelling (that horrible thing where the wax only burns in the middle of your candle and wasting half the wax), you've got to let it melt. This might take between 2 to 4 hours so don't light it for the first time if you're in a rush.
NEVER leave a naked flame unattended or put your candle in a draughty place or within reach of children or pets. It might be a small flame, but it's still fire.
When you've enjoyed your candle and it's reaching the end of its life, DON'T let it burn down to less than 5-10mm from the bottom of the jar. If you see the metal sustainer that keeps the wick in place, blow it out and let the jar cool. You can wash your jar in hot soapy water and reuse it - the wax is natural vegetable wax so it will easily melt away.
Lastly, relax and take a moment to enjoy your candle.
